“Parents should encourage their child to play sports, but don't push him or her. Let the player choose to practice and give up. If that's what he or she wants. They should also try to understand what their child is looking for in sports and promote a supportive atmosphere so that he or she can reach his or her goals. It is also helpful when parents help children understand the valuable lessons that sport can teach, such as responsibilities, fair play, and respect.”
“Autonomous support from parents, such as showing an interest; listening whenever possible; supporting the athlete’s needs or desires; and allowing him or her to participate in decisions have positive influences on motivation and performance.”
“Highly supportive parents of elite athletes challenge children to give more and do their best—the more support, the greater the challenge,” said Meireles. “However, too much pressure is reported to have negative effects on young athletes. Unfortunately, although the ideal amount of parental pressure has been identified, there is still no complete or definitive understanding of what it may cause.”
